Maybe you woke up this morning thinking, “What do I really know about the sex life of snails?” I’m here to help. I heard this story on the way into work one morning and I thought it would be a weird way to pay tribute to a cousin/brother/friend who is doing an excellent job as a new dad. It’s the hardest job in the world, from what I can see.
I’m a little worried about showing the behavior of snails using humans, and humans I know and love especially. The analogy begins and ends with him, the caring male mollusk.
Panel 1: Off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, a species of mollusk – Solenosteira Macrospira – enjoy the mating season.
Panel 2: Soon, the female attaches fertilized eggs in pods to the male’s shell. He takes care of their offspring …
Panel 3: … as well as the young of twenty-five other guys.
Panel 4: The male uses his child-rearing skills to impress the female.
